The Wounded Wolf: The Sympathetic Werewolf as Healer and Teacher in Harry Potter and Contemporary Paranormal Literature
Wolves and werewolves are traditionally associated with lust and violence. Periodically, however, a different type of werewolf emerges. Paranormal romance “alphas” dominate modern literature, but sympathetic werewolves are found in Harry Potter, The Wolves of Mercy Falls, and the Alpha and Omega series: werewolves “through no fault of their own,” innocents wounded deliberately. They struggle with their wounds, their unwanted monstrous nature, and their potential for wounding others. Paradoxically, their wounded wolfishness gives them the ability to recognize pain, to teach, and to heal. This paper incorporates new elements of Rowling’s werewolf mythology, new understandings of wolf behavior, and modern attitudes surrounding wild wolves.

Harry Potter and the Quest for Family: Heteronormativity and Homonormativity in Canon and Fanon
This paper will explore the heteronormative aspects of both primary and secondary canon, exploring the marginalisation of queer identity within the Potterverse. The paper will queer the canon and discuss some of the influential applications of queer critical theory to the Harry Potter series. It will examine how Harry’s journey through the books might have influenced Rowling’s decision to close the series with the Epilogue, in order to give Harry’s quest for family a resolution. Finally, the essay will consider the extent to which transformative works reclaim the canon to give a voice to queer characters, together with questioning how far transformative works break down (or reinforce) heteronormative and/or homonormative constructs.

Betas are an indispensable part of the writing process. Betas keeps writers on track chronologically, finds SPAG mistakes, and makes a writer's prose and structure better. Slash and professional m/m authors will join up with their long-term betas to discuss the following topics: Why a new set of eyes is important. What a writer can learn if they’ll LISTEN. The difference between a beta and an editor. Why it’s important that you check your ego at the door. Why a beta needs to feel comfortable telling an author the truth. When a manuscript is so f**ked up, even a good beta can’t save it. Things authors have learned from out betas and vice versa. Keynote Lunch: Morality from Harry Potter to the Real World

While characters like Dumbledore, Snape, and Harry were created for an imaginary world, their impact extends far beyond it. Fans look to these characters as models and inspiration for how to live their own lives. But these characters are not simple archetypes, or one dimensional figures.  They are complex, changing, and often morally ambiguous people; in other words, they are human.  So how do real fans read morality and ethics in these series and apply it to their own lives?  Why are so many adamant about reading Snape, perhaps the most morally complex character, as “good”, or at least redeemable? How do questions of representation and visibility of marginalized groups within Potter impact diversity and understanding?

This panel will address how and why morality and ethics move from the page into real life. Panelists will discuss how the series inspires fans to activism in real world issues.  They will look at how different characters engage with and provide models for various moral structures. They will discuss the value of Potter as a source for morality, and debate its potential problems and contentions. Join these scholars, activists, and experts for a lively conversation on what it means to be a fan in an era of controversy and cultural change.

Making Magic: Fandom, Community, and Meaningful Lives
As increasing number of people in the West, particularly young, educated people are dissatisfied with traditional religious institutions. But these individuals continue to make meaningful lives, and fandom is an appealing structure for many. In this presentation, Jodie will explore fandom, particularly the Harry Potter fandom, as a vital and important element in contemporary Western culture that exists alongside, and sometimes as alternative to, more traditional religious options. Borrowing from fan studies, philosophy, literature, and religious studies, this presentation will use the Hero's Journey mythic structure as an entry point for this complex discussion.

Same Story, Different Skin - Remixing Retellings in Multicultural Fantasy
Fairytales, legends and mythology are the narratives we’ve used to explain the world around us. They also share similar roots. The Western “Cinderella” is the Filipino “Abadeha,” the Indian “Nala and Damayanti” is the Western “Sweetheart Roland.” As publishing begins to embrace diverse narratives, how has this affected our treatment of fairytale retellings in a diverse setting? If the story wears a different skin, can we still consider them retellings?

Back into the Pensive: Ridiculous Harry Potter Fan Theories You Forgot About
Remember those Harry Potter theories you were so sure about? There was no way Harry was a horcrux. Some of us knew that Ron would absolutely die. Remember my last, Petunia?! Nine years later, we’ve all been proven wrong (or right!), while most of our favorite speculation has been forgotten. Well, it’s time to dust off those old message board threads and relive the glory days. Could a time travelling Ron Weasley actually be Dumbledore? Are Neville’s parents actually communicating with him through those gum wrappers? What’s up with the locked door in the Department of Mysteries? Let’s talk Harry Potter like it’s 2006.

Taboo Kink, Dark Fic and (Self) Censorship (+18 night)
A roundtable discussion about the ways fandom pushes boundaries, analysing if anything is or ever should be taboo and exploring fandom kink memes, kink-focused communities past and present, the history of darkfic and kinkfic in HP fandom and the ways in which we can keep fandom free from censorship.  What do we need to know about the importance of content restriction free communities, and keeping fandom a safe space to explore fantasy and/or trauma, free of shame or self-censorship?  How do we encourage and create non-mainstream works?  Does the platform fandom operates on impact on the safety of the fandom space (e.g. Tumblr versus Livejournal)?  How (if at all) has the shift in the size of fandom had an impact on free speech in the fandom space? How have these genres changed (if at all) post canon-close?  Does a smaller fandom create a safer space for these kind of fanworks? Are there trends in the rise, fall and rise again of fanworks falling within these genres?  Are the popular HP fanworks on AO3 representative of the Livejournal communities interest in fanworks which push content boundaries? AGE RESTRICTION: 18 YEARS AND OLDER

Femmeslash and Ageism
It is not uncommon in fannish discussion for the topic of female marginalisation in slash to rear its head. We will consider the marginalisation of female sexuality through a different lens, with a focus on femmeslash and ageism. Focusing on the changing face of HP femmeslash, we will ask whether there is a propensity for fan communities to be influenced by mainstream and Western cultural 'norms' when it comes to physical beauty and sexuality, which marginalises older female characters by suggesting implicitly (through lack of representation) that once a woman reaches a certain age, they are past their prime. We invite discussion around the visibility of older female characters in fanworks, the works of the OLSB, the demise of HP Beholder and participation in communities such as Minerva Fest, Hoggywartyxmas and HP Goldenage to consider the extent to which older characters remain visible as sexual beings in modern HP fandom. Is there an insinuation (through lack of visibility) that erotica should only be the domain of the young and the beautiful? In writing and drawing female characters, are there risks of implicit acceptance of patriarchal standards of beauty which an alternative space would usually be expected to interrogate and challenge?

Queer Eye for the Male Gaze (NEW TIME)
A comic and critical examination of the visual grammar behind the “normative” male gaze in Western media— with an eye to recognizing, dismantling and re-purposing it for female and queer narratives and audiences.

The camera’s “eye” is neither neutral nor objective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and in Western film, television, comics and commercial photography, that authorial eye has been almost exclusively trained on the agency-less female body, for the benefit and consumption of male, hetero-normative desire. This is what Mulvey referred to in her seminal work, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, as the Male Gaze. In this lecture, writer/filmmaker Lilah Vandenburgh takes on the notion of sexual gaze, and using visual examples, argues it’s not inherently a bad thing, showing how it’s conveyed through an intersection of film grammar and audience participation. She’ll examine the default ways western film grammar has codified and reinforced male gaze in film, TV and print media, especially in regards to audience point of view and identification, power roles, sex and objectification, reinforcing status quo and systems of authority. She’ll also take a look at counter-narratives and novel examples where gaze breaks down or is cleverly co-opted by women and LGBTQIA+ storytellers to create a new visual-desire paradigm. Finally she’ll speak of the future of gaze, entreating the audience to explore how to further push and elevate the non-normative gaze in their own storytelling and the media they consume.

Going from Fanfic to Profic: the Path from Slash to Original M/M & F/F Publishing
The transition from writing fanfiction to writing a book can be a daunting prospect, but, particularly as the market for m/m and f/f ebooks expands, more and more fanfic writers are finding a place in the publishing world. In this panel, slash writers who've made that jump discuss the following: how they got into original writing; why that ‘Fifty Shades of’ book may have been the best thing to happen to fanfic writers in years; whether you need an agent, what publishers are slash friendly and how to submit your manuscript to them; the steps to go from query letters to finished manuscript, and everything in between; the difference between the synopsis and the cover blurb; what to expect after you've sold your book; and how writing fanfic gave them a career. Join us at this panel and discover that it's absolutely possible for your publishing dreams to come true!

Magic, Technology, and Power: The Wizarding World's Problem with Justice
Magic in the wizarding world of Harry Potter and technology in our ordinary Muggle world are two sides of the same coin. Both magic and technology enhance our natural powers. Their uses also shape our natural and social worlds. We will examine and seek to understand the socio-political effects of magic in Harry Potter - in particular, the wizarding world's profound and systemic injustices.

Slash and Feminism
This panel considers the extent to which slash can be a feminist activity. The panel will look at the pros and cons of slash fiction through a feminist lens, examining whether focusing on male characters and male sexuality reinforces a typically male bias or whether slash can be said to satisfy a desire to reclaim popular narratives to subvert the male gaze. Is the ability to write fiction without content limitation in and of itself a feminist activity, and how can parallels be drawn between media reactions to slash fiction and the suppression of women’s writing? The panel will look at how the female characters in canon heterosexual relationships are dealt with (or dispensed with) in slash fiction. We will also consider character bashing of canon female characters and question whether or not female writers in a largely gendered space have a responsibility to consider the role and characterization of female characters when writing slash.

The Ethics of Severus Snape
Aristotle wrote that the tragic hero has to be a man “who is not eminently good and just, yet whose misfortune is brought about not by vice but by some error or frailty.” In Shakespeare, tragedy is in large part caused by a flaw in character and/or misjudgment. In Harry Potter, Severus Snape can be seen as a tragic hero, though he is not the main character, his misjudgment is vital to the entire story.

Focusing on four characters—Molly Weasley, Narcissa Malfoy, Albus Dumbledore, and Severus Snape—with seemingly solid categorization in a traditional moral system, she employs an ethics of care standpoint to evaluate each character’s actions and broaden the understanding of the moral paradigm presented through the complex, problematic network of relationships.

Snape and Sirius in Canon
Sometimes, you can’t help the hate. But as much as they loathed each other, Sirius Black and Severus Snape were similar: brilliant, immature men with ruined lives who willingly gave those lives to protect Harry Potter. Both kept Harry’s parents’ love alive and passed that love and protection to Harry. Both knew themselves to be good despite being hated. And if we look closely, we see that both died knowing the good in the other.

Adversarial Slash Relationships and Why We Love Them
Friends to lovers is a great fic trope, but what about those ships where both individuals canonically despise each other? What is it about enemies falling in love that makes our slashy toes curl, and why is it that some of us consistently find our OTPs not in the warm and comforting sides of fandoms but rather in their more hostile, wands out, swords drawn environs? Join us as we explore the snarky, difficult aspects of slash ships where Our Lovers' path to True Love is a bit rockier--and more likely to involve a well-placed hex or two along the way.

Playing the Blame Game: Who's Behind the Shortage of Femslash?
This panel will look at both sides of the issue, from the creators to the fans. On the creator side, we’ll consider how female representation in media (or the dearth of it) affects the number of shippable female characters. On the fannish side, we’ll look at some commonly cited reasons why fandom, which is majority female, tends to avoid writing f/f stories. Taking into account popular fandoms like Harry Potter, Teen Wolf, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Supernatural, Legend of Korra, Once Upon a Time, Steven Universe, and Homestuck, we’ll examine some potential causes for the comparative lack of femmeslash and look at some possible solutions.

Let’s give them some love and address what draws readers to some minor characters.
