Making Magic: Fandom, Community, and Meaningful Lives

As increasing number of people in the West, particularly young, educated people are dissatisfied with traditional religious institutions. But these individuals continue to make meaningful lives, and fandom is an appealing structure for many. In this presentation, Jodie will explore fandom, particularly the Harry Potter fandom, as a vital and important element in contemporary Western culture that exists alongside, and sometimes as alternative to, more traditional religious options. Borrowing from fan studies, philosophy, literature, and religious studies, this presentation will use the Hero's Journey mythic structure as an entry point for this complex discussion.
